Little Chickies

Quick stop at the house to see how things are going with the chickens, the garden and with Kim.

Here is our brooder set up. It is Bruno's old kennel. And a warning; when Kim and I walked into the spare bedroom one of the chicks was missing. The bottom has too large of openings and it had gotten out. Not a huge deal since Kim keeps the bedroom door shut but we'll probably have to line it.

Here are all three. We've decided on names.
The Barred Plymouth Rock on the left will be Tootsie, the Wyandotte in the middle is now Jelly Bean and the Araucana on the right is Ginger.
(I'm sure everyone's been waiting with baited breath for that info.)

Anyway, I cleaned Tootsie's little butt off today, I was afraid she was pasting up.

("REAR END "PASTING UP": Sometimes the stress of shipping causes the manure to stick to the back of the chick. It is important to remove this daily. Pull off gently. Or better yet, wash off with a cloth and warm water. It will disappear in a few days as the chick starts to grow. Make sure the chicks have access to water at all times."
from Strombergs Chickens)

Although our chicks didn't ship from anyplace this is still a condition to monitor.

Some sleepy little chicks.

Kim said Chelsea has been very interested in the chicks but not aggressive. Well, she changed her tune when I was here. Seems she's trying to say, "Look what Dad's gone and brought home while you were gone! Just look at this!"

She'll have to adjust.

Those are just the cutest things - I tell ya. Have you got the coop ready yet? I am learning everything I can from you and other bloggers about raising these little ones. I am so excited for you and for me.

I WAS waiting on pins & needles for those names! ;-)
They are almost as adorable as those little chicks. I just want to pick them up and cuddle them, pasty butts or not. Have fun with them in this sweet stage.

Awww... they are so cute! I love the names!
My grandmother once told me a story about her grandmother putting chicks in a box by their old wood burning stove to keep them warm. I thought... "Now that must have been smelly!" LOL

Ginger looks tuckered out. My meat chickens sleep on their sides like that with their head stuck out. The first few times I saw it I was sure we'd had a catastrophe but they were all fine. Love how cute they are now!

How nice to see them sleeping that way... When they grow bigger, some sleep while sitting up.

So dang cute! ACK! Too funny that Chelsea didn't have much to say about your new boarders until you got there.

BTW: I have several comments on my blog that I just haven't published yet. I'll get around to it.

Wow, they are incredibile! I love little chicks. When I was a child, almost every week I bought a chick. And we were in a block apartment. These photos are bringing sweet memories to me.

Take care of them!

Yay for babies! I really want chickens but I'm just not ready yet for the commitment. Every time I see baby chicks I reconsider. I assume the missing one has been found?
I once had baby bunnies baby-gated in a room, and one day one was gone. I was sure a kitty got it, and I was devastated, but then it reappeared. It had been slipping through the holes in the gate and hanging out under the dishwasher. Animals.

Congratulations, and welcome to the world Tootsie, Jelly Bean and Ginger. So, cute. I'm so envious of your chicks. But look forward to meeting them personally very soon. Teresa
