Chelsea meets The Chicks

Kim got brave this week and allowed the chicks to run free with Chelsea in the yard. You'll notice Chelsea got rather "barky" but otherwise didn't try to hurt anyone. I think she wanted to actually play. Tootsie seemed the least affected by Chelsea's antics. Tootsie also seems to be the friendliest chick so far.

They're growing so fast. They love being out in the yard but they're also very calm and well behaved so far. Staying basically in one spot makes them happy. We'll see how long that lasts. And if you can see one chick, you can see them all because they hate being separated. That's how we round them up, put one chick away and the rest will follow. The coop will be completed next week. I let them spend time in there during the day when I'm too busy to supervise them in the yard, but the chicken 'house' is not quite ready for them to sleep inside at night.

Also our cat Ebby seems to understand that the chickens are not for her to eat. Kim said she laid down at his feet one afternoon while he was tending to the chicks and she didn't even bother looking at them. Not that I would trust that mouser-girl very far with my little babies.

awwww, that video is so sweet. I think you could just leave Chelsea in charge of them ~ it looks like she could keep them herded together! You're brave to let them all loose together ~ I'd be afraid my dog would pounce! (but then again, he likes to chase regular birds like Robins, blue jays, etc. in the yard).

Pretty cool!! One of my dogs started barking (the oldest one- 15 1/2) when the video started. I am surprised she even heard it. Looks like Chelsea is trying to herd the chicks. My Aussie would be going wild trying to keep them together.

That is way too cute! Your girls didn't even seem to mind Chelsea. I am going to bet they all become fast friends~

Wow, how cute is that! She definitely wanted them to play with her.

I love videos of chickens. I have no idea how they really act.

The chicks are cute..... and these chicks are replaying their genetic habits by staying together for safety and comfort. But they will less close as they get older...

That was cute. Chelsea is so cute and the chicks don't seem bothered by her at all. What type of dog is Chelsea? She looks like she's got some Husky in her.

Cute. I just love when the animals get along. One of my dogs is good at playing nice with other baby animals, but the other one gets too rough, so I don't introduce them anymore. It reminds me of a video on youtube- I haven't watched in a long time, but I like to watch it periodically. A pit bull with brand new baby chicks. So sweet. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2OC5Z1Fii8

Cute! Yes, Chelsea wants to PLAY! She's barking at the chicks like our dog barks at our other dog when he wants to play! Cute video.

hee hee! You know what I bet is happening? Chelsea is half Corgi and they are herding dogs. I bet her instincts are coming out, it looks as though she was trying to keep them in a group. Songo acts pretty close to same way, she did stop barking at them after a couple weeks. It does look like Chelsea wants them to play with her, cute! I wish I could remember to record Daisy chasing Songo in circles around the yard, it's so hilarious!

Funny how the one chick would not be intimidated... no fear and stood her ground. good stuff.
