Chicks and Grandkids

Our three chicks have arrived. Actually we picked them up today from Dunlap Nursery in Caldwell. Aren't they gorgeous? Why are baby chicks so darn cute?

We have an Araucana, a Barred Plymouth Rock and a Silver Laced Wyandotte.

So far the Araucana seems to be vying for the top chick position. She is the largest so that may make a difference.

The next largest chick is the Barred Plymouth Rock. At least I think that's what she is. The employee at Dunlap's pointed out the breeds very quickly. So I'm thinking this one is the Rock.

That leaves the Wyandotte as the smallest chick.

I'm so excited. They're so darn cute. Our brooder is set up and ready to go with water, feed and temp up to 95 degrees. With a nice soft sheet for their first night.

Only I won't get to watch them.

I'm babysitting.

The grandkids.

OK. Not really grandchildren at all. (Don't want to offend actual grandparents and grandchildren.)
But, so far, these two are the closest I come to having grandchildren.

I'm babysitting my son's dogs for a few days. At his house.

Yeah, it's a bachelor's house alright. Opposite side of town from our house. Seemed easier for me to come out here than to bring the dogs to our house so they could terrorize Chelsea, Ebby, the garden, the koi, the chicks.
I think you get the picture.

Here's what I'm dealing with.

Yeah, Scarface and Bruno. It's gonna be a lotta fun.

Yeah, I think I would prefer taking care of the chicks...hee hee.
I've had Barred Rocks and the Silver Laced, but not Araucanas. I love the color of the green eggs they lay. Happy chick tending!

OMG! I love the little Wyndotte! It has this wise little look about it! I envy you for dog sitting! Those two gentlemen look like they are ready to show you a good time!

Those little chicks are so cute! I'd love to be able to have chickens here. You mentioned your koi so I had to look at your pond post. I hope you'll share more pictures of it. It looks beautiful.

What fun, Victoria! And what pampered little chicks! Araucanas/Ameraucanas are closer to wild, so I'm not surprised that particular chick would go to the top of the pecking order. Mine have always been dominant as well, except when we had a Rhode Island red, who lorded (uh, ladied?!) it over all. I've had all three breeds, and they're all gorgeous when they're grown, so you have a treat in store! Have fun with the pups, they look great!

Victoria, your little chicks are so cute. My husband wanted to have chickens when we move to SC, but we ended up buying a lot in a gated community--you know - one with rules. I told him that I am sure the Home Owners Assoc. would not allow chickens. His idea was to put little jackets on them and tell everyone they were our grandchildren....I am married to a nut!
You are a nice mom to babysit the doggies at their house-- my mom takes mine when we travel. They like going to grandma's house!

Yeah for the baby chicks! They are so cute! Our barred rocks have a yellow dot on their heads. I don't know what that is all about but that is what they are. The silver-laced Wyandottes are so not cute when they are tiny to turn around and grow into suck beautiful birds. I can't wait to see them in a week!~

They look like fantastic dogs! What a treat to get to be their grandmother for a little while! Oh, and the chicks, yea! I really am jealous. If we'd gotten chicks when I wanted them they probably be in the freezer already. Most of them, not the ones I'll keep for eggs/pets, of course. I wanted a couple dozen. I've seen people get pretty cuddly with their pet chickens, I'd love to have one or two in particular that become full-time residents in the yard.
